Reflection
I wanted to update a PowerPoint that I use in my Art Around the World class, about Rangoli’s in India, for my second and third graders. I chose in the updated version of this presentation to use a Prezi instead of a PowerPoint. I think that Prezi’s are more appealing to an audience and are more interactive, which I have discovered over the years is much more successful with students at the elementary level. As you can see, from the post above, the PowerPoint presentation is on the left, and the new Prezi is on the right. The link to the Prezi is below the images above, you can access and walk through the presentation. When I created this PowerPoint a couple of years ago, I was unaware of Prezi and what it could do. I decided to go ahead and recreate all of my slides so that I would be able to use this presentation this coming year. I think the new presentation is much more appealing to the eye visually. I tried to remove lots of extra words from the two history pages to keep the presentation simplified and easy to follow (Mayer’ coherence principle). I will also be adding commentary (Mayer’s modality principle) we go through the presentation to provide more information that what is on the slides, in order to keep a well-balanced dual coding effect. I tried to use Mayer’s principle of segmenting for the overall design of the Prezi, where new information is presented in different segments. Mayer’s pre-training principle is introduced in the very first slide where key terms are introduced before discussing the history of the Rangoli. By using a Prezi and adding more graphics, less words, and two videos, I utilized Mayer’s principle of modality. I tried to use Mayer’s redundancy principle by repeating the key words on the first slide throughout the presentation. I think this updated presentation is more appealing both visually with how the Prezi moves and auditorily through the use of in class narration.
